Marine team shooters on the range practicing the 200 yard rapid fire portion of the National Trophy course of fire, which is executed from the sitting position (photo: NARA). To this day the very the best military and civilian shooters in the nation (and world for that matter) gather for several weeks in the summer heat to compete in the most prestigious events the nation has to offer, and it was from an intense desire to take home Camp Perry’s National Match trophies where this story begins. Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio is the mecca of American high power rifle competition, and has been host to the vast majority of the National Matches since their inception in 1907. To properly tell the Unertl sniper rifle’s story, one must go back to the golden era of military team shooting: the years in between the world wars.

The Unertl sniper rifle was to be a tenuous program, but one which nonetheless produced the most capable and deadly sniper rifle of WWII. Gonna get all the glass out and measure up diameters and focal lengths and see if I can find some super high grade lense replacements on Edmonds. The most iconic sniper rifle of the Second World War, the USMC M1903A1 8x Unertl equipped sniper rifle was the backbone of Marine snipers in WWII and Korea.īorn of the Marine Corps’ elite National Match rifle teams, the story of the National Match M1903 and M1903A1 Unertl sniper rifle are one and the same as it was from the former that the latter were selected. The fine adjustment levers use a slightly smaller BB. I've discovered that the ball bearings in the collars on Black and Decker 1/2" router bits are the same exact size as the detents on the main knobs. Not many wear parts outside of the BB detents and springs. I've taken these scopes apart, so I think my next step is to fully refinish this scope in a new black oxide finish and bring it to a brand new state. I see this untouched scope and my wheels spin further. I'm 90% there with an agreement with someone to swap the MST 150 elevation assembly for another MST 100 assembly Optics MST 100 and fabricated a "sniper" plug doe the area they machine out. I've converted it to an MST 100 using the elevation assembly from a U.S. I scored that second Unertl for $2400!! Figure enough time passed to now tell people. He sent me pics of a "broken" one that any layman would think was broken, but I knew better. I got that one by emailing the guy who manages the auctions (after I won the 1st one)Īnyway, I figured I scored some brownie points by paying 5k for #1011, so I asked if he had any "not so perfect" ones. The 2nd one I got, #1045, was an early MST 150 conversion. When the CMP was auctioning off the Unertl scopes, as you know, i bid and won one when I got the M40 bug.#1011.

So, ha ha, they may have been 30-something pounds, and the rounds were 5 lbs each, but we got 'em and you didn't! It will pick a BTR-76 off the ground when it hits it. Sometime in the '70's they came up with a new HEAT round for it. End of WWII vintage, used a lot in Korea, some in Viet Nam. A lot of us talked about where we were headed but not all of us got there.Īnd one more to make you even more jealous, we packed M67 Recoiless rifles. He went through Ranger School after attending SFUWO. One of my SFUWO (scuba) classmates was a Recon Marine and he went to Force Recon. Two of which I understood were headed the way of spec-ops. Fine, until you have to lay in position, or worse, low crawl.Īs far as schools go, I graduated Ranger school with one 'BUDS' graduate, and several Marines. Which was really more of a low chest holster. Leadership types, (Lt's, CO's, PSG's 1SG's) all had new shoulder holsters. Our line types had the WWII holster, that you literally "fished" for to get it out. It seems 'Hollywood', but much more effective than what we had. Even though, what I wanted to say was it was a pretty unique idea. It was going in my mind how effective that was, but without a holster it just looked stupid. Part of my "comment" was 'drawing like I had the holster'.
